Spartacus: House of Ashur somehow feels bloodier than Spartacus

The show will premiere Dec 5, but from the trailer, they seem to have captured everything we loved about the blood and sand in Spartacus. Nick Tarabay comes back as Ashur, but now he owns his own Ludus and is actually big enough to attract Rome's biggest names including Julius Caesar himself. Lucy Lawless also returns as Lucretia.
I never thought the franchise could come up with something better than its previus seasons, but House of Ashur now feels like Spartacus's posthumous revenge. We could actually see how a former gladiator plays a major role in putting a stop to the bloody industry and possibly striking a Blade at the very heart of Rome. I'm still conflicted about the dwarf gladiators though because I think it is historically incorrect and more of a marketing stunt

Yeah, I’m with you, it looks like they’re tapping back into what made the original work, just with a new power dynamic. Ashur running his own Ludus could open up some great storytelling, especially with Caesar in the mix. You're right though, the dwarf gladiator bit feels off, it breaks the tone a little. Still, if they stick the landing, this might actually justify reviving it

I really got mixed reviews on this one. Nick Tarabay's portrayal of Ashur is on point. I love it. Unfortunately, he is the only thing that connects this show to Spartacus; the rest is totally off. Their attempt to turn Tenika Davis's Achilia into some goddess of the arena actually hurt the show. Spartacus thrives on authenticity, and while I have no problem with a female lead, I don't agree with that script at all
