  • Second Game Crash?

Nintendo, once the company that saved gaming, is now facing backlash for filing patents that could let it claim ownership over common gameplay mechanics, sparking fears it could stifle creativity and harm both major studios and indie developers alike.

  • So… Doctor Who Just Regenerated Into Rose Tyler?

According to writer Robert Shearman, the 15th Doctor’s regeneration into Billie Piper has basically put a full stop on the entire Doctor Who story. That’s a wild way to end things if he’s right. After all these years, do you think this is a fitting way to close the loop or does it feel more like the show’s run out of ideas?

So I’m sure a lot of you gamers have already hears about Nintendo’s terrible patent files and lawsuits, but here’s the irony. The same company that once saved and revolutionized gaming, could soon destroy it. Now Nintendo wants to claim ownership of certain game mechanics that have since become a staple in many video game franchises. Eveything from magical weapons, to color shading and character silhouettes, to summoning allies and capturing monsters. It’s absolutely disgusting how a company like Nintendo has gone from a once proud gaming giant into another soulless corporation fatcat, looking to make money through various sinister means— no matter how many customers get hurt or caught in the legal crossfire. I believe that if Nintendo keeps doing this, eventually it’ll force other games to adapt, and remove certain key features or programs that Nintendo may target. Not only that but, even Indie Developers are not safe from Nintendo’s prowling gaze. We need to stop this madness somehow before it’s too late. Otherwise gaming will end with Nintendo’s greed beign teh soul cause of a second game crash.

Yeah, I’ve been following that too, absolutely wild stuff. It honestly blows my mind how far Nintendo’s gone down that road. They used to be all about innovation and fun, now it feels like they’re guarding every inch of turf with their lawyers instead of just standing on the success of their titles.

I get protecting IP, but some of the stuff in those filings sounds way too broad. If they actually tried to enforce half of that, it’d hurt devs way more than it’d help anyone. Especially the smaller studios, they don’t have the cash to fight that kind of nonsense.

Hopefully this blows over or gets shut down fast. Last thing gaming needs right now is more corporate power trips.

Could it be that a crash can provide the industry with a much needed reset?

I actually genuinely believe it would.

In recent years, and ESPECIALLY after the Pandemic Boom, most major studios have gotten, for lack of a better term, fat and lazy. They kinda take players for granted, shoveling out incomplete, broken products with some of the worst mechanics and narratives of all time and expecting them to just eat it up.

While a crash would hurt, I think it's absolutely necessary to bring the industry back to a place of 'genuine passion' over 'corporate bullshit'.

Know what I mean? Companies these days are too focused on profit and stocks, so they won't take risks on new things, or reviving fan favorites. 'Good will' is no longer a valued currency, so now we get to deal with the industry standards being FIFA, CoD, and mobile gachas (don't get me wrong, I love my waifu games, but they would serve MUCH better as full fledged games).

i was wondering is a schism would server a similar function. If the "whale bait" could exist in a different ecosystem than the regular old games?

Paradise would be a place where a company like EA stuck to creating money printers all the while some other company uses the IPs gamers love to make actual games.

The mobile (app/play stores) market could be a good example. Developers have kind of abandoned that space and the eastern studios have taken their place. Time gates, autoplay, heavy microtransactions, gacha, etc. The list goes on and evidentially there is a type of consumer that is willing to take part in it.
